FAQ - Family Photo Sessions in Des Moines

Frequently Asked Questions

Just as every family is different, I'd say all photo sessions are different; which I love. I usually don't come to a session with too much of a structured plan; the time spent together tends to move in direction far better than I can predict. I like to go with the flow. Keep the kids at ease and not put too much pressure on them. When they feel at ease is when the magic happens. We have many options when photographing. We can shoot at a nearby park at sunset that I love near Waukee. We can shoot downtown Des Moines in the evening when it's quiet. We can shoot in your living room or in your own backyard. We can visit a cupcake shop, or go ice/roller skating, splash pad, ice cream shop, cute boutique, greenhouse, or even a movie theater. There are so many options when it comes to a session location in the Des Moines area. Where do you feel most comfortable telling your family's story?

I prefer, and love, to photograph you and your family where everyone is most comfortable. I often get requests for candid shots, and it's when you feel more relaxed that I can photograph the real connection in the family. I love when I can just observe for a while and photograph while you interact. We might throw a blanket down on the grass and get comfy. We may have to rearrange your living room to get the best light in your home; just be aware that I might climb on your couch and rearrange some furniture to get the best shot. There is no such thing as a typical photo session. I am up for anything.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A SESSION?

Sessions are primarily on-location and focus on interactions and expressions. The main goal is to capture unique and meaningful moments for every family. I grab the "looking family portrait" first thing in every location so the "work" is complete ASAP. Sessions are casual and children are free to explore, play, and just be themselves. I want you to walk away from a session feeling like you weren't stressed out trying to get everyone to smile. I want you to enjoy each other and have fun. I strive to take images that aren't EXACTLY like everyone else's. From laughter to serious expressions, I aim to create images that will bring you memories for many years to come.

I HAVE A COUPLE IDEAS I'D LIKE TO USE FOR MY SESSION...

I love when we can collaborate and come up with some unique images together! We can create the Pinterest-pinned photos of our own! If you have some ideas you'd like me to try with your family, please feel free to share with me!

SUGGESTIONS FOR WHAT TO WEAR FOR OUR SESSION?

Whatever you are comfortable in! Neutrals always photograph well. Throw in a few pops of color too! If you are a jeans and T-shirt kind of family, wear that. Layers are great. Try to keep it classic and not extremely trendy; unless that's the vibe you want for the session, of course! Clothing choices should be fun and vibrant but most importantly, they should reflect you! For families, it is best to coordinate clothing without matching each other exactly. Different textures, layers and colors photograph best. Another fun tip is to use color choices that match your home's décor, as this is where you will be hanging your printed images.

WHAT SHOULD WE BRING? (IF ON LOCATION)

Bring anything that your children love. If a lovey makes your little one feel a bit less shy, bring it along. My daughter cherishes her "Friend" and I love capturing her with it because I know this phase of her life will not last forever. If your child is into a certain toy bring that as well. The more we can make your photographs personal to you, the more they will mean to you and hold special memories of the time you are spending together now. It's not about looking like the perfect family; it's about being perfectly imperfect... lovey and all.

MY CHILD DOESN'T REALLY LIKE GETTING PICTURES TAKEN

No worries; I have two children of my own and they don't always like a camera in their face either. I take my time when necessary to find out what they like and if we have to talk about stinky feet or sing a silly song to loosen them up, then that's what we do! I'm also not above "paying" the child in small doses with non messy candies like Smarties along the way. Keep them smiling and a little reward throughout to keep momentum is always welcome.

HOW LONG UNTIL MY IMAGES ARE READY?

Within 2 to 4 weeks, depending on season, you can expect your edited digital files in your online gallery. I will choose the images that I feel tell best represent my work as well as your family. These high resolution images can be downloaded, shared and printed directly from your online gallery. I will usually post a sneak peek to Facebook within a few days. I usually post extra images on Instagram as well.
